In a large saucepan or double boiler combine 1/2 cup sugar, salt, cornstarch and flour. Gradually add milk and eggs, stirring constantly over medium-low heat. cook and stir until mixture thickens, 15 to 20 minutes. Remove pan from heat and strain into large bowl to remove any lumps. Stir in butter and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Cool to room temperature. When the filling is completely cooled, gently fold in sliced bananas and pour into baked pie shell.

Mix whipping cream with vanilla extract and sugar until stiff peaks form. Spread on top of pie and serve or refrigerate until serving.
