In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter and shortening with an electric mixer for 30 seconds. Add the sugar, baking powder and salt. Beat until combined, scraping the bowl. Beat in the egg and vanilla. Beat in as much of the flour as possible with the mixer. Stir in the remaining flour. Divide the dough in half. If necessary, cover and chill the dough for 3 hours or until it is easy to handle. On a lightly floured surface, roll half the dough until 1/8-inch thick. Cut into desired shapes with cookie cutters. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake in a 375° oven for 7 to 8 minutes or until the edges are firm and the bottoms lightly browned. Cool on a wire rack.
