Blend the sugar, salt, vanilla and crisco. Sift the flour and baking powder twice. Add the flour alternately with the water and beat until smooth. Beat the egg whites until stiff but not dry. Fold into the batter. Bake in layer pans that have been criscoed and floured in a moderate oven for 30 minutes.
