Sift the dry ingredients together into a bowl, then cut in the shortening with a pastry blender. Dissolve the yeast in the warm water and then add to the buttermilk. Pour this mixture into the flour mixture and stir with a wooden spoon until blended. Roll out the dough to a 1/2-inch thick and cut with a biscuit cutter. Place on a greased baking sheet and brush with melted butter. Let rise until doubled in bulk, then bake for 15 minutes in a 400° oven.
