Casserole Bread

Scald milk, then stir in sugar, salt and shortening. Cool mixture to lukewarm. Measure the warm water into a large mixing bowl. Sprinkle in yeast, stirring until yeast is dissolved. Blend in the lukewarm milk mixture. Add flour and stir until well blended (about 2 minutes). Cover and let rise in a warm place, free from drafts for about 40 minutes or until doubled in bulk. Stir the batter down and beat vigorously for about 30 seconds. Turn batter into a well greased 1 1/2-quart casserole dish. Bake uncovered at 375° about 1 hour. Brush top with butter while still hot.
