Cut a thin slice from the root end of the onions so they can stand level. Slice the tops from the onions, then make a hole in the center of each and remove some of the interior onion. In a covered saucepan, boil water with salt and and cook the onions over medium heat for 15 to 20 minutes until tender, then drain. Brush the onions with salad oil and sprinkle with paprika. Place 2 tablespoons of shredded cheddar cheese in the center of each onion, then sprinkle with salt and pepper. Cover each onion loosely with foil and cook in the oven for 15 minutes. Remove the foil for the last 5 minutes to brown the cheese.
