Preheat oven to 300°. Whisk yolks and 1/2 cup of sugar in a large bowl. Bring the cream to a simmer in a heavy small saucepan. Whisk the hot cream into yolks, then whisk in the vanilla. Divde the chocolate among for 3/4-cup custard cups and ladle the custard over the chocolate. Place the cup in a baking pan. Add enough hot water to the pan to come halfway up the sides of the cups and bake until the custards are just set tin the center, about 55 minutes. Remove custards from water and cool. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
Preheat the broiler and sprinkle 1/2 tablespoon of sugar over each custard. broil until the sugar caramelizes, about 2 minutes. Cool 5 minutes and serve.
