Butter and line the bottom of an 8x12-inch pan with 1 cup of vanilla wafer crumbs. Melt chocolate in double boiler and add water, egg yolks and granulated sugar. Stir until thick, then let completely cool.
Cream butter and powdered sugar and whip into the chocolate mixture. Add vanilla and nuts. Beat egg whites until very stiff and fold into chocolate. Sprinkle the top with wafer crumbles. Chill for 24 hours.
