In a double boiler, cook the milk, sugar, bread crumbs and chocolate over hot water until smooth. Stir in the butter. In a separate mixing bowl, beat the eggs until light, then add the salt, vanilla and 1/2 cup of milk. Stir in the chocolate mixture and cook until thick. Pour into a serving dish or for a firming pudding, bake for 20 minutes in a buttered baking dish. Chill and serve with whipped cream.
