Cream the sugar, shortening and eggs. Sift the flour, baking powder, soda and salt. Save 1 tablespoon flour mixture to dredge the apricots with. Add the buttermilk and flour mixture alternately to the sugar mixture, stirring only until well mixed. Fold in the apricots and nuts. Line a greased 9x5x3-inch pan with waxed paper, then lightly grease the wax paper. Pour the batter into the pan and bake at 350° for 50 to 60 minutes.
