Cream shortening and 1/2 cup of sugar. Sift the flour, salt and nutmeg then cut into the creamed mixture. Press in wax paper-lined 9-inch square pan. Bake in 350° oven for 15 minutes. Add the remaining cup of sugar to the eggs, then beat until fluffy. Add the remaining ingredients, mixing thoroughly. Spread over the baked layer and continue baking an additional 35 minutes. Cut into 2-inch squares while warm.
