French Bread (Hard Rolls)

Dissolve the yeast in warm water, then add the 1 3/4 teaspoons of sugar. Mix together the additional sugar, salt, shortening abd boiling water. let cool to lukewarm, then add to the yeast mixture. Add 6 cups of flour and stir well. Let rise for 40 to 50 minutes, beating down with a large spoon every 10 minutes. Put the dough on a floured board and add additional flour until the dough is not sticky and can be kneaded easily. Knead well and make into long french loaves or small rolls. Brush with milk and add sesame seeds. Let rise in a warm place, about 1 hour. Bake at 400° for 25 minutes.
