Cream the shortening and sugar, then beat in the eggs. Dissolve the soda in boiling water and pour over the dates. Mix the honey, rum and orange juice together then add to the candied fruit. Mix the flour and nuts and add alternately to the creamed mixture with the two liquid mixtures. Add the vanilla. Pour into a loaf pan and cover with shredded cocnut. Bake at 325° for 40 to 60 minutes.
