Preheat oven to 325°. Sift together flour, baking powder, salt and soda; set aside. Combine butter and sugar in a large mixing bowl. Beat at a high speed with an electric mixer until creamy. Add eggs, one by one, beating well after each. Combine buttermilk and vanilla in a separate bowl. Add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture, alternating with the buttermilk/vanilla mix, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Blend well after each addition.
Grease and flour a 10-inch Bundt pan. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake 60 to 65 minutes or until the cake springs back when touched in the center.

Combing sugar, water and butter in a saucepan. Heat until the butter is melted, but do not boil. Add vanilla. Run spatula along the edges of the cake. Prick the cake with a fork and slowly pour the sauce over the warm cake, allowing it to seep in. Cool the cake, then remove from the pan. Sprinkle with confectioners' sugar just before serving.
