(It's really a cake!)

Separate the eggs, then beat the egg yolks. Add the sifted sugar, a spoonful at a time. Add the water to the mixture. Beat the egg whites until stiff. Add the yolk mixture slowly to the egg whites, beating lightly. Sift together the flour, baking powder and salt. Add the flour mixture to the egg mixture and continue beating lightly. Add the vanilla while beating. Pour batter into 2 pans lined with wax paper and bake at 325° for 30 minutes.
Slice the cakes in half, making 4 cake sheets and spread the filling between the layers. The cake is best if made the night before, covered with foil and put in the refrigerator overnight.

Pour the gelatin into the cold water and continue stirring for 10 minutes constantly. Add the warm milk and continue stirring. Whip the cream then add the milk mixture immediately and slowly, along with a little sugar.
