Preheat the oven to 400° and generously grease a cookie sheet. Mix the dry ingredients together in a mixing bowl, then cut in the shortening until the mixture is crumbly. Pour in the buttermilk and mix lightly. Roll the dough on a lightly floured surface 3/4-inch thick, adding as little extra flour as possible. Cut out the biscuits and place 1-inch apart on the cookie sheet. Bake for 12 to 14 minutes or until golden, then serve hot.
