In a mixing bowl, cream the butter, shortening and sugar unti light and fluffy. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Combine the dry ingredients and add to the creamed mixture alternately with thebuttermilk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Stir in the vanilla and lemon extracts and mix. Pour into three greased and floured 9-inch cake pans and bake at 350° for 25 to 30 minutes or until the cakes test done with a toothpick. Cool for 10 minutes in the pans before removing to wire racks to cool completely. Spread the frosting between the layers and over the top and sides of the cake.
