Preheat your oven to 375°. Grease an 11x7-inch glass baking dish. In a medium sized saucepan, combine the peaches, 1/2 a cup of sugar and the water. Bring this mixture to a boil, stirring frequently. While the peach mixture is coming up to a boil, beat the egg, remaining sugar and the shortening with a spoon until it is fluffy. Add the milk, then stir in the flour, baking powder and salt. Spread the batter in the prepared baking dish, then pour the hot peach mixture over all of it. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until tender. Serve warm with cream.
