In a 9-inch heavy skillet melt butter or margarine with brown sugar. Cool slightly. Arrange pineapple slices on sugar mixture; garnish with maraschino cherries. Cream together butter or margarine and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat egg, add to the mixture, and mix well. Sift together flour, baking powder and salt and then add alternately with milk, mixing well after each addition. Add vanilla extract. Pour batter over pineapple slices; bake in moderate oven, 350°F, 50 minutes. Serve warm.
