Cream the butter until light and fluffy, then beat in the brown sugar. Beat the eggs well, setting aside one white for the top. Add the beaten eggs to the butter-sugar mixture. Add the vanilla and flour and beat thoroughly. Pat evenly into a lightly buttered jelly roll pan. The dough should be 1-inch thick. Beat the leftover egg white slightly and brush it over the top of the dough. Sprinkle lightly with the cinnamon/sugar mixture, then press the almonds into the dough evenly. Bake at 325° until delicately brown and firm to the touch, roughly 20 minutes. Cut into squares and serve.
